To strengthen our R&D team, we are looking for an

 

 

 

                                                                                                INK CHEMIST

 

 

 

ROLE

 

 

 

You will be responsible for supporting the Technical Manager – Liquid Inks at Springfield, VA. The Ink Chemist researches and develops liquid ink formulations for flexographic, silkscreen, and gravure applications predominately in UV curable and aqueous systems. Reporting to the Technical Manager, Liquid Inks, this individual will work independently to fulfill normal, short- and long-term projects via the appropriate level of project planning, collaboration, milestone tracking and reporting. Experience in formulation of UV curable paste inks a plus.

 

The position requires a four-year college degree in a related scientific discipline (Chemistry, Chem. Eng., Material Science, etc.) with at least 5 to 10 years’ experience in liquid ink systems. This detail-oriented proven scientist should exhibit a high level of independence and initiative in driving for results under precise time constraints.

 

You will be responsible for the following tasks: 

 

  • Research and development of new as well as improvement of existing high performing liquid ink systems for flexographic, silkscreen, and gravure printing processes for a diverse array of applications and substrates.

 

  • Build new ink systems around best available polymers, diluents, and additives.  Ink system formulations must often be customized to accommodate unique security features that are not typical ink ingredients.

 

  • Collaborate with chemists and scientists locally and at other sites in researching, developing and adapting analytical techniques and methods in understanding and improving liquid inks systems.

 

  • Partner with engineering and manufacturing teams in efficiently and effectively transferring products from lab into production.

 

  • Perform accurate detailed data collection, analysis and reporting. Assume responsibility of project documentation including experiments, analyses and results.

 

  • Develop specifications using statistical approaches, control limits, test methods and standard operating procedures for ink development and quality assurance.

 

  • Provide technical assistance, on-call, and press-side, to investigate and resolve issues with products and address customer complaints. Estimated travel of 10% may be required.

 

  • Lead root cause investigation for non-conforming products related to liquid inks.

 

  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment following all safety guidelines.

 

 

 

PROFILE

 

 

 

  • Requires a four-year college degree in a scientific discipline (Chemistry, Chem. Eng., Mat. Science, etc.)

 

  • Candidates should have at least 5 to 10 years’ experience in liquid ink systems.

 

  • Thorough understanding of each component of liquid ink formulations (and industry offerings), interfacial and surface chemistry. Knowledge of security ink technologies a plus.

 

  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques, manufacturing equipment and processes for liquid inks.

 

  • Experience in a productive, fast paced, goal-oriented environment.

 

  • Exceptional computer skills, proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access). Knowledge of SAP a plus.

 

  • Strong communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills. Proven technical writer desired.

 

  • Driven, ethical, trustworthy individual, with high expectations of self and others. Able to work independently and in a team environment.

 

  • Intuitive, quick study, imaginative, adaptable, and energetic; balanced with structure and a disciplined approach.
